En 1970, Marcel Broodthaers afirmó que Mallarmé es la fuente del arte contemporáneo. Esta frase sirve como punto de partida para la exposición y el catálogo de Arte y utopía. A partir de esta lectura de Broodthaers y de la influencia que Mallarmé ejerció en figuras fundamentales de la modernidad, como Artaud y Apollinaire, se ha elaborado una reinterpretación del arte del siglo xx, desde el cubismo y las vanguardias históricas hasta el arte de los años sesenta, cuestionando la idea misma de modernidad. La información que conforma el catálogo es muy variada: incluye un ensayo de Jean-François Chevrier, abundante material documental, poemas y otros textos literarios, además de reproducciones de las obras presentadas en la exposición.
In 1970 Marcel Broodthaers confirmed that Mallarmé is the source of contemporary art. This affirmation served as the main reference point for the exhibition and the Art and Utopia catalogue. In this book, which covers Broodthaers and the influence that Mallarmé exercised over fundamental figures of modernity, such as Artaud and Apollinaire, proposes a reinterpretation of 20th century art, from Cubism and the historical avant garde until the art of the 1960s, which questions the very idea of modernituy. Varied information comprises the catalogue: an essay by Jean-Franóis Chevrier, abundant documental material, poems and other literary texts, as well as images of works presented in the exhibition.
