Professor St Peter has built a new house with the proceeds of his wife´s work, an eight-volume history of the early Spanish explorers. Upon moving, however, something in him rebels and he takes refuge un the comforting, shabby study of his former family home, spending the summer reflecting on the people he loves - his wife, Lillian, his two married daughters and, above al, Tom Outland, his most gifted student, and once his prospective son-in-law.
