Looking for freedom

What is Freedom? Does it vary between different societies? Is Freedom just the absence of pressure or is it the pressence of something else? And if so, what is that something else?* The Berlin Wall was built in 1961, splitting Berlin City in two halves for 28 years. Many individuals on the Eastern side tried to escape to the Western side motivated, among other reasons, by a lack of Freedom.
