They were used in the context of bwami, the initiation society which strove to achieve the moral improvement and perfection of its members. The research conducted in the 1950s by the anthropologist, Daniel P. Biebuyck, with respect to the Lega has been of vital importance for the interpretation of this hermetic, yet universal forms.
