This book is a collection of photographs and personal essays that chronicle a young womans ten-year passage from the mountains of Tora Bora to the uprisings in the Arab world at the beginning of 2011 that led, amongst other things, to the resignation of president Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and the cruel war in Libya. Kate Brooks images portray the harsh beauty and poignant pain of a region mired in conflict, while the accompanying essays relate her experiences as a woman photojournalist in the Muslim world. At the age of 23, following the Twin Tower attacks, Kate Brooks moved to Pakistan to photograph the impact of U.S. foreign policy in the region. In 2003, she covered the American invasion of Iraq from Kurdistan and for Time she began to photograph the beginning of the Iraqi insurgency. Since then, she has expanded her focus to include life in Iran, Gaza, Pakistan, Lebanon and Afghanistan a place she returns to regularly.
