David Goldblatt is an unavoidable figure within African photojournalism. The signs of colonialism, the havoc and strategy of apartheid, the racism against black culture, and the most intolerable cultural contradictions of post-colonial South Africa have all paraded themselves in front of his camera. His photographs, which are politically aimed, yet outside of the angle of explicit activism, encompass the everyday chiaroscuro of South African life, fragmented by inequality. Being Jewish was probably what allowed him to understand the true feelings of anti-Black xenophobia. The exhibition, organized by thte MACBA, covers 51 years (1948-1999) of his photographic work. The catalogue includes, aside from the 222 photographs displayed in the show, articles by Corinne Diserens, Okwui Enwezor, J.M. Coetzee, Ivan Vladislavic, Michael Godby, Chris Killip, and Nadine Gordimer. The glossary was prepared by Goldblatt himself.
