Vansina describes the genesis of the Hutu and Tutsi identities, their growing sociaol and political differences, their bitter feuds, revolts, and massacres, especially after 1870. He describes a groing cycle of violence between these groups resulting in widespread massacres nd gruesome torture, and the relevance of this dramatic history to th post-genocide Rwanda of today.
